THE latest monthly crime statistics for Warrington have been released – with a certain type of crime experiencing a large jump.

New figures have now been released by the Home Office which cover August 2024 – the most recent period for which data is available.

The town saw an overall rise in reported incidents of crime, with monthly data also including the number of crimes reported on each street in the town.

As per the figures released on police.uk – which is run by the Home Office – 1,589 crimes were reported across the town in August.

There is a discrepancy with the figures due to the fact that the police log ‘reported crimes’, which means that some crimes that went unreported will not be in the figures.

Equally, some crimes may have been reported more than once.

The figures show the number of reported crimes in August was up from the 1,512 reported in July, and also up from the 1,386 reported in August 2023.

Across Warrington, the streets with the most crimes reported in August were:

  • Park Lane – 138*
  • Chester Road – 104*
  • Elm Road – 11
  • Patten Lane – 9
  • Woodvale Close – 9
  • Bexhill Avenue – 9

*The large number of reported crimes on these streets is linked to Creamfields 2024

In terms of crimes reported from public areas, August’s figures were as follows:

  • Shopping area – 55
  • Parking area – 55
  • Supermarket – 51
  • Petrol station – 28
  • Nightclub – 19
  • Hospital – 13
  • Prison – 7
  • Bus or coach station – 7
  • Police station – 6
  • Sports or recreation area – 4
  • Park or open space – 2
  • Further or higher educational building – 1

While some categories of crime rose in August compared to the previous month, others fell.

Violent and sexual offences continue to be the most prevalent type of crime in Warrington with 600 reports in August – but this is down from 679 reports in July.

This is followed by anti-social behaviour – up from 180 to 191 – then drugs, public disorder and ‘other theft’.

Drugs in particular saw a huge rise from 52 reports in July to 177 in August, however this is likely due to the staging of Creamfields music festival.

Overall, most crime types experienced falls in reports, namely: bicycle theft, burglary, criminal damage and arson, other crime, public disorder, robbery, shoplifting, vehicle crime, and violent or sexual offences.

The number of reports of possession of weapons remained the same, while the number of anti-social behaviour offences, drugs, other theft and theft from a person offences all rose.

In terms of the outcomes of these reports, 689 remain under investigation, according to the data, while 73 are awaiting action or a court outcome.

However, 573 resulted in no prosecution, for reasons such as no suspect being identified, being unable to prosecute a suspect and further action not being in the public interest.
