FIRE engines rushed to a residential street in Howley yesterday afternoon, Wednesday.

Two fire engines from Warrington and Birchwood fire stations were dispatched to St Elphin’s Close in Howley.

This was at 4.09pm after Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a fire in a flat.

On arrival at the scene, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to put out the blaze.

A thermal imaging camera was then used to check there were no further hotspots, with crews in attendance for two and a quarter hours.

A fire engine from Warrington Fire Station was earlier dispatched to Mardale Avenue in Orford at 1.20pm.

This was due to a ‘cooker incident’ and came after firefighters were called to a report of a smell of burning in a property.

On arrival, they found a laundry basket had been placed on top of the cooker, causing it to melt.

The crew removed the basket and ventilated the property by using a high-pressure fan.
