AN unauthorised traveller encampment has been reported in Warrington.

Having not had a reported camp for a number of weeks, caravans have been spotted in the town this afternoon, Friday.

Two caravans and associated towing vehicles pitched up on pavement near to the town centre.

They arrived on land at Centre Park this afternoon, with washing lines also erected in the vicinity.

The land is privately owned, with the camp being without permission on pedestrian areas.

A transit site for travellers has long been sought in Warrington, with funds allocated to provide one, however a suitable site has not been located.

The last update on the proposed site was given in the summer.

At the time, council leader Cllr Hans Mundry said: ““The council is committed to the delivery of an appropriate transit site within the borough, in support of both the travelling and settled community.

“The council recognises the impact of illegal encampments on all sections of the community.

“The council has allocated funds within the capital programme for the delivery of such a facility, and it continues working to establish a suitable site to bring forward for planning permission and delivery via the Cross‐Party Cabinet Traveller Task Group.”
