A NEW training base for Warrington Wolves has been approved by Warrington Borough Council.
The plans for a new training ground were originally submitted in March to move training operations to Victoria Park, off Knutsford Road in Latchford.
The proposal outlined the conversion of the existing under croft into a gymnasium and changing room facility, along with the erection of modular classrooms and offices for the Warrington Wolves Foundation.
The Wire’s currently training ground is at the University of Chester’s campus in Padgate, on Crab Lane.
However, the site has been earmarked for housing following the university’s departure in 2021.
“The club uses this via a tenancy agreement, but this is due to be terminated in the next few months, and there is to be an imminent sale of the land for development,” a document submitted with the plan reads.
“After working closely with Warrington Borough Council to secure alternative and fit for purpose accommodation, the existing sports and recreation facilities at Victoria Park have been identified as being the most suitable and sustainable location within the borough.”
At a Warrington Borough Council planning meeting on Thursday, the application was discussed, and the benefits of the new modular classrooms and offices were outlined.
“The rugby club already have a presence at Victoria Park, using it on occasion as first team training base along with existing use by the foundation,” said Philip Forster, from development management.
“The development would make a positive contribution to the community via the charitable aims of the rugby club. The application is therefore recommended for approval subject to conditions in the main report.
The classroom is set to be built as a temporary fixture but will be clad to represent a more permanent structure.
The existing community use of the facility will remain unimpacted, and the provision will be an additional supporting accommodation for the park.
Members of the committee voted on the application, and unanimously approved it.
