A COUPLE have reached their diamond wedding anniversary after 60 years of happy marriage.
Marion and Billy Hutcheson met when they were just teenagers at a church dance in Scotland, where they grew up.
While Marion admits it wasn’t love at first sight, love grew between the pair and after three years they got engaged.
On October 3, 1964, the happy couple got married in East Kilbride and later moved to Warrington for Billy’s work in 1982.
“Initially I would have gone back in a heartbeat, I found it quite difficult because I wasn’t working,” said Marion.
“But once I got some work and got to know people it was fine.”
Marion and Billy lived in Birchwood for more than 30 years before moving to Woolston in 2009.
The couple, who have two children together, admit that marriage isn’t always easy, and it takes a lot of work to make it last 60 years.
“I think we’ve had to work at it,” said Marion.
“I think all marriages you have to work at. Any problems we have has we have just worked through it.
“He’s got a lot of patience. I think that’s why we have made it through so many years. We just get on together.”
Marion and Billy, who are now 80 and 81, believe they are the first couple in the family to have reached their diamond wedding anniversary.
Their daughter Audrey has planned a small gathering to celebrate the milestone, where they will watch their wedding video with friends and neighbours.
