A WARRINGTON Wolves fan has been reunited with his lost wedding ring thanks to the power of social media and the kind-hearted people of Warrington.
John Summerfield was at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday night to watch Warrington beat St Helens by a golden point drop goal in extra time, to set up a Super League semi final clash with Hull KR.
The 77-year-old celebrated with fans in the East Stand at the final whistle, clapping and cheering the players as they made their way round the ground.
But it wasn’t until the following morning that he realised he had lost his wedding ring amid the celebrations.
John, who lives in Westbrook and has been a life-long Warrington fan, said: “I spent Sunday turning the house upside down trying to find the ring.
“I’ve not taken it off in 53 years but it must have come off during the game.
“I thought it was lost and I’d never get it back.”
This is where Margaret and Terry Wright and the power of social media takes over.
The couple, who are season ticket holders at Warrington, were sitting a few rows in front of John at Saturday’s game and as the stadium emptied they noticed the wedding ring on the floor, which was engraved with John and his wife Marje’s names and their wedding date.
The couple handed the ring to steward Carl Taylor who made sure it was securely locked away in the safe for the rest of the weekend.
Margaret posted about the ring on a Warrington Wolves fan page on Facebook, which was spotted by one of John’s relatives.
John said: “I couldn’t believe that it had been found!
“It’s amazing and I’m so grateful to Margaret and Terry.
“I was waiting for Wolves reception desk to open on Monday morning so that I could pick up the ring and put it back on my finger.
“I thought I’d never see it again but thanks to Margaret and Terry and Carl, and the Facebook fan page, it’s here.
“It really is a miracle.”
John offered to buy the couple tickets to Warrington’s next game but Margaret and Terry wouldn’t accept his kind offer.
Margaret said: “We didn’t do it for the reward, we just wanted the ring to get back to its owner.
“I knew how upset Terry and I would have been if Terry had lost his wedding ring.
“It’s fantastic that John now has it back.”
A spokesperson for Warrington Wolves said: “We’re really pleased to hear that the wedding ring was found and returned safely after our play-off game at the weekend.
“It’s a great example of the fantastic community spirit amongst our fans and we want to thank those involved for returning it to the owner.”
