A RESIDENT has stated his delight that an ‘abysmal road of a hundred patches’ is finally being resurfaced properly.

Former Warrington mayor Geoff Settle previously spoke of how road safety on Delph Lane in Winwick was a ‘lottery’.

But now, he says that Delph Lane bridge over the M6 is getting a ‘full monty’ treatment.

“I am delighted that resurfacing work has begun on Delph Lane, and that the failed patchwork quilt of the road surface will be scraped off the Mill Lane side of the M62 bridge,” Geoff said.

“The previous effort was abysmal, with patched potholes breaking up almost as soon as they were filled in.

“They kept breaking up, and car tyres have been scattering stones onto the footpath, making it very difficult to walk on.

“I saw the boss sweeping thousands of small stones off the pavement, heading up a large crew with many machines scheduled to play their part in a very smooth operation.”

Geoff says there are still a lot of issues to sort out with Delph Lane from a safety point of view following a series of recent accidents.

“The white ‘slow’ signs in the area are barely visible, and my wife picked out the fact that the white line on the bend had gone,” he continued.

“When I ran there the other day, I found that the disappearance was because it was a series of curved potholes, which of course you cannot paint.

“Delph Lane was one of my favourite short runs, a five-miler to Winwick and back.

“I never used to have a care in the world, but starting my eighth decade and current traffic conditions, I must take extra care.

“You must take note that this used to be a quiet country lane with little traffic.

“However, when I visited the area on Sunday between 1pm and 2pm, cars were going past on average every five seconds.”
