WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols shares her views in this week's column.
This week I am delighted to be in attendance at Labour’s first conference as the governing party in 15 years.
This year conference is based in the north west down the road in Liverpool. It is great to welcome the party to our region and meet with campaign organisations who hold a wide range of expertise.
Labour now has a fantastic opportunity to change the country for the better. I have been listening to Cabinet ministers talk about Labour’s plans for Britain which we want to enact as soon as Parliament returns after the conference break.
This includes a new deal for workers, which will ban zero-hour contracts, end fire and re-hire and make work pay by ensuring the minimum wage reflects the increased cost of living.
Renters will finally be able to live in their homes without fear of no-fault eviction as Labour has pledged to abolish Section 21.
We are committed to tackling the housing crisis and building more houses. Those living in overcrowded homes or trying to get on the housing ladder will have hope that they can live in a newly built home made possible through planning reform.
Now that Labour is in Government we can finally do these things and make a real difference to the lives of working people.
I know the first few months has not been easy. Due to the financial situation inherited from the previous Conservative Government there was a projected overspend in the public finances of £22 billion for this year. If unaddressed this would have increased the budget deficit by 25 per cent.
As a result we need to make tough decisions and fix the foundations of our economy. This will help us secure a brighter future and ensure public services get the investment needed.
There is light at the end of the tunnel and I wholeheartedly believe this Labour Government can deliver the prosperity and change our country needs.
