EXCITED pupils from Warrington and Windes primary schools journeyed across the globe to Brazil for an eight-day expedition.
Children from Kingsway Primary in Widnes and Evelyn Street Primary Academy in Warrington had the amazing opportunity to explore the wonders of South America, as they were whisked away on a trip to the city of Montes Claros.
A group of 30 pupils in total from years five and six made the 13-hour journey.
Once they had landed, they went and met other students from Prisma School, based in the city.
The Evelyn Street and Kingsway students took part in classes, learning about the geography and culture of Montes Claros.
And the children visited the local towns and enjoyed tours around museums, markets, churches and parks.
They were able to experience the fascinating history of the diamond mining town Grao Mogul and even had the opportunity to search for diamonds.
A highlight was exploring the caves of Lapa Grande with their new Brazilian friends and sharing a picnic of traditional Brazilian food with them.
The trip by the two Warrington Primary academy (WPAT) schools was made possible with the help of the Global Schools Alliance, an organisation which aims to build a worldwide network of schools and encourage children to become worldwide citizens with an understanding of communities outside their own.
Evelyn Street assistant headteacher Louise George, who was one of the teachers accompanying the pupils, said: “It was a great adventure as some had never been on a plane before, never mind another continent.
“They enjoyed it so much that they asked if they could stay for a few more days.”
Kingsway Primary Year 6 teacher Stephanie Davis added: “It was an amazing and unforgettable experience for the pupils and teachers who went on the trip.
“Some genuine friendships were created, and the children learned so much about the culture, geography and history of the area. The schools will continue to stay in contact and build on the friendship.”
A trip to Peru is now in the planning, with Evelyn Street and pupils from Ditton Primary in Widnes set to visit the South American country’s capital Lima next June.
