A ‘remarkable’ man who shares his name with Warrington turns 100

Warrington Dubique was born in 1924 more than 4,000 miles away in Dominica – and was given his name despite having no connection to the town.

He moved from the small Caribbean Island to the UK in 1956 and, by sheer coincidence, ended up getting a job in Warrington.

“He came over alone on an Italian cruise liner that took about 13 days, and he landed in Plymouth,” said Warrington’s granddaughter, Racheal.

“We asked him if he moved to Warrington because he’s called Warrington, but he said no.

“They were met by some gentleman in Plymouth and taken straight away to Liverpool. The next day he had to work, and the work was in Warrington.

“It’s just a complete coincidence.”

This job was at Rylands Wireworks, where Warrington ended up staying as an employee for 31 years and was given the nickname Tony to avoid confusion.

“A lot of people call him Tony, I didn’t even know his name was Warrington until I saw his birth certificate,” said Racheal.

Here he settled down and raised his family, the majority of which are still residents of Warrington.

He became a central part of his family, and his community in the many years he’s spent living in Longford where he is well liked.

“He does a lot for church and charities, and he always used to go round to the hospitals and give people communions,” said Racheal.

“He’s very lively, he likes his music and his food, he’s got a cracking sense of humour it’s just his mobility slows him down now.”

Warrington will celebrate his 100th birthday today, Thursday, with a huge celebration with his family, including his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

“It’s amazing because he said he never thought he’d live to that long but the way he eats, where he was raised you eat from the land, so he’s always been one for homemade food.

“He’s a firm believer of putting cloves in his cups of tea - garlic, nettle tea, mint tea things like that.

“He’ll eat parts of fresh aloe and as kids growing up, we were like ‘that’s disgusting’ but to be fair he’s still going, and his skin and his teeth are remarkable.

“He’s remarkable he really is.”
