THOUSANDS of runners are expected to take to the streets of Warrington as a popular festival makes its return this weekend.

On Sunday, Warrington Running Festival will return once again for its fourth year, after more than 6,000 runners took part last year.

RunThrough, which organises the event, is the UK’s and Europe’s fastest-growing running events company.

Last year’s event was the world’s first free to enter closed road mass participation event, and 66 per cent of participants having never taken part in an officially organised race before.

This year’s festival will feature a 5k, a 10k, a half marathon and a junior’s race, all of which will be in aid of St Rocco’s Hospice.

“We are incredibly excited to bring back the Warrington Running Festival,” said Ben Green, co-founder of RunThrough.

“It’s always a joy to see the community come together to support such a worthy cause like St Rocco’s Hospice.

“Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere, there’s something for everyone at this event.”

Participants can also enjoy a vibrant event village in Bank Park, with entertainment, activities, and food.

At 9am, runners completing the half marathon and 10k routes will set off from Winmarleigh Street.

Both routes will see participants go along Wilson Patten Street before going part way up Mersey Street and then off along Knutsford Road.

After a quick lap around Victoria Park, they’ll head along Black Bear Park and the Trans Pennine Trail.

The 10k runners will then circle back near Ackers Road, while those attempting the half marathon past Stockton Heath and along Lumb Brook Road.

When they get to Grappenhall Lane, they too will start their route back to the town centre on Broad Lane.

Plenty of roads will be closed for the event, a list of which ones will close and when can be found here.
