POLICE have arrested a man following reports of a drone flying over a prison in Warrington.
Shortly before 1am this morning, Tuesday, Cheshire Police was called to reports of a drone flying over the Charlie Wing at HM Prison Risley.
Officers were quickly deployed to the scene, and following a search of the area, they located a man in a black Ford Mondeo on Silver Lane.
While searching the vehicle, officers discovered a drone in the boot, along with a small amount of cannabis.
Two knives were also recovered, along with a mobile phone.
The driver of the car, a 38-year-old man from Manchester, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of conspiracy to convey class A and B items into a prison.
He was also arrested on suspicion of possession of class B drugs and two counts of possession of a knife.
The man remains in custody at this time, where he is assisting officers with their enquiries.
Following the arrest, DI David Schofield said: “While this investigation is in the early stages, we know that drones are often used to convey illegal items into prisons.
“We work closely with all the prisons in Cheshire, and we are committed to doing all we can to tackle the issue.”
