THE return of Krazy Races to Warrington would be ‘very much welcomed’, the council has said.

Thousands of people filled the town centre in June as the downhill soapbox derby took place.

More than 40 teams participated, building and racing their own go-karts downhill while tackling the track with chicanes, obstacles, water and more.

The go-karts were certainly innovative, ranging from a self-storage container to a cake to a pool table.

Bridge Street was lined with spectators who spent the day cheering on the racers, while crowds of people gathered at Time Square and Old Market Place to watch the racing on TV screens.

It was one of a number of events in the town centre which made up the summer programme, leading to ‘record-breaking’ levels of footfall.

Some of the activities in the town centre, particularly around Time Square, saw year-on-year increases in visitor numbers over 100 per cent.

The biggest success was Krazy Races, with the screening of the races in Time Square leading to an increase in footfall of 194 per cent in the precinct compared to last year.

Due to its success, the Warrington Guardian asked Warrington Borough Council whether it would actively look to seek a return in 2025 for Krazy Races.

In response, a council spokesman said: “Krazy Races was delivered by an external events company, but promoted and supported by Warrington BID.

“We worked with the BID to ensure it was a safe and successful event.

“The event was a demonstration of what can be achieved by working in partnership and by engaging local people and businesses.

“We would very much welcome Krazy Races back to Warrington in the future.”
