A BEWSEY tenant has had to live with a hole in his roof and a branch hanging over his front door after a storm saw part of a tree collapse onto his rented property.

The resident has been in a two-week battle with the housing company who own the land the tree stands on, to have the branch removed along with the debris it has caused which litters the front of his home.

The tenant rents the house located on Towers Court in Bewsey which is situated next to a strip of land owned by home builders Persimmon Homes.

A fortnight ago, as Warrington along with other areas in the north experienced strong winds due to the tail end of Storm Lillian, the resident’s house was struck by the branch of a large tree which stands on the land to the right of his home.

Owner of the property, Lorraine Hryziuk described how the roof was ‘battered’ by the tree branch and left considerable damage to the roof.

“Our tenant lives next to a strip of land which has the trees you can see in the pictures growing on it,” she explained.

“There has been previous issues with the trees and leaves blocking guttering and branches battering the roof.

“The strip of land is owned by Persimmon homes. Persimmon homes have been previously and cut back the trees.

“During the storm a branch has fallen on the roof of the property causing considerable damage to the roof, guttering and facias.”

Ms Hryziuk added that the branch is also laying on telephone wires adding an additional concern.

“There is also a substantial amount of debris in the front garden and a public pathway was also blocked with branches from the trees, which after one telephone call were removed immediately by Warrington Borough Council,” she said.

The tenant contacted Persimmon Homes after the incident two weeks ago and was responded to on the same day and told by a representative that they needed to ask their insurance company to deal with the removal of the tree and a claim for the damage.

Ms Hryziuk continued to explain how 18 emails were sent by herself along with six phone calls, with no response given by the housing company after her and her tenant responded to say ‘they were not insured to remove anything which did not belong to us’.

She added: “Our tenant is living with a hole in his roof, a branch hovering over his front entrance and all this debris in his front garden.

On Tuesday, a member of Persimmon Homes customer care team responded to Ms Hryziuk to reiterate that they are ‘not equipped to deal with issues of this nature’ and advised the resident to contact their insurance company one again or otherwise arrange for works to be completed to remove the tree branch and then contact Persimmon Homes for their insurer’s details after.

After the Warrington Guardian raised the issue with Persimmon Homes and requested a comment from them relating to this incident, the house builders reached out to Ms Hryziuk and agreed to arrange having the tree branch and debris removed.

A Persimmon north west spokesperson commented on the incident, saying: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused to the owner and tenant of the property.

“Once we were informed that branches had landed in the grounds of the property, a member of our team contacted the tenant living in the property that same day.

“Although we still have not been provided with the insurance details of the landlord as requested, we did send a team to tidy up and remove the branches from the property.

“We have advised that the landlord submit a claim to our insurance company regarding any damages.”
