A PRIMARY school with around 400 pupils is 'deeply shocked' after it was hit with a two-star food hygiene rating.

Callands Primary School, which is on Callands Road, was visited by Inspectors from the Food Standards Agency on June 25.

The Primary School, which teaches children from four to 11 years old, has around 400 students.

Around 18 per cent of the mixed community school’s pupils are eligible for free school meals according to the government website.

Despite the fact that the latest Ofsted inspection found that the school was Outstanding, the latest Food Standards Agency found that it required improvement.

The ratings are issued by the Food Standards Agency and are publicly available online.

Ratings range from five, very good, to zero, requires urgent improvement.

The Food Standards Agency does not disclose the full reasonings behind the ratings, but it does reveal general areas requiring improvement.

Inspectors issued a rating of two-stars to the primary school, but noted that the cleanliness of the facilities, including pest control and hand washing facilities were ‘generally satisfactory’.

The same was found for the management of food safety, which includes that food sold or served is safe to eat.

However, inspectors found that the hygienic handling of food, including the preparation, cooking and storage of food, requires improvement.

Parents of students at the primary school received a letter yesterday, Monday, informing them that changes have been made since the inspection in June.

"We were shocked and deeply concerned at this news and took immediate action to address the issues identified by inspectors," the letter read.

"This work has been carried our with our catering contractors, Dolce, and has included replacing some members of the kitchen staff, as well as the installation of a new refrigerator, kitchen floor and door, redecoration and extra training.

"The inspectors made an interim visit at the end of the summer term, noted these improvements and told us that they were happy with the progress that we had made.

"We have now applied for a re-inspection and are confident that this will see our top grade being reinstated."

The rating is available to view of the Food Standards Agency website.
