A HOUSEHOLD name retail chain has been revealed as eyeing up a move into the town’s empty Wilko unit.

The historic name closed the shutters for the final time on its Golden Square Shopping Centre store in September last year.

It followed weeks of uncertainly following the chain’s slip into administration in August, with numerous bids failing to take over the whole business.

In September, GMB union confirmed that all 400 Wilko stores would close down, with the brand fading from the country’s high streets by October.

In December, the Warrington Guardian revealed that a number of offers were on the table for various units in Golden Square – including Wilko.

Now, a licencing application submitted to Warrington Borough Council has revealed that one retail chain eyeing up the former Wilko unit is B&M.

The discount retailer already has two stores in Warrington, at Cockhedge Shopping Centre and Riverside Retail Park.

B&M Retail Ltd has applied to the council for a premises licence for the supply of alcohol at Unit C1, Golden Square Shopping Centre, specifically listed as the former Wilko unit.

The Warrington Guardian approached B&M for a statement on opening in Golden Square, as well as what this meant for the town’s other two B&M stores.

However, the business failed to respond.
