From the Adam West’s camp Caped Crusader to Tim Burton’s gothic fairytales to the gritty film noir vibes of Matt Reeves’ latest movie, Batman has had more eras than Taylor Swift.

That is not even mentioning the comic books where it all began, graphic novels, various animated series and Christopher Nolan’s hugely acclaimed trilogy which set the benchmark for superheroes on the big screen.

Suffice to say the Dark Knight’s brand of vigilante justice has been capturing imaginations for generations.

In fact, 2024 marks 85 years of Batman – and seeing this milestone celebrated and the legacy of Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s legendary character explored all under one roof is the joy of Batman Unmasked at Manchester’s Depot Mayfield.

This exhibition has seen vehicles, costumes and props pulled out of Warner Bros’ vaults and flown over the Atlantic.

With no replicas whatsoever, all the items showcased are the genuine article and many of them have never been displayed publicly until now.

Covering all the movies, as well as spin-offs like Joker and Suicide Squad, there were moments when I was taken aback thinking about the scenes these props played a part in and the stars associated with them.

If you’re a fan of Batman, you’ll be in your element and it’s easy to lose yourself in all the little details.

The exhibition also feels really well curated – taking you through a series of rooms and experiences that make you forget you’re essentially in a vast warehouse.

The only downside is that Batman Unmasked is pretty short – you’ll probably be done in less than an hour – but it’s a truly unique and memorable opportunity and well worth it.

Batman Unmasked is in Manchester until August 25. Visit batmanexhibition.com/manchester
