POLICE have been informed following a deliberate fire lit in a subway which only recently underwent a stunning transformation.

One fire engine from Warrington Fire Station was dispatched to Wellfield Street in Whitecross yesterday evening, Tuesday.

This came after Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of the blaze in a subway shortly before 8pm.

A fire service spokesman said: β€œA small fire in a subway was believed to have been started deliberately.

β€œIt was put out by firefighters who also informed police due to the suspicious nature of the fire.”

In June 2022, the transformation of the subway was revealed after it became a magnet for anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and graffiti.

The issue was highlighted in surveys sent by Cheshire Police to residents, who shared concerns over the safety of people using the subway, especially at night.

To combat crime, the subway was threatened with closure, which would have made the lives of all residents a misery.

But it underwent a stunning transformation into a community asset thanks to pupils from Sacred Heart, Evelyn Street and St Barnabas primary schools, who ran a competition to pick a theme for the mural.

It was then beautifully transitioned from design to reality by talented Birmingham-based graffiti artist Joe Miles.

The mural took around two weeks to be completed, with an anti-graffiti coating applied that can last up to 20 years.
