A WARRINGTON MP raised the issue of tackling violence against women in the UK with the Prime Minister in the House of Commons.

Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols highlighted the recent developments of the Sky News’ investigation into sexual harassment faced by former NHS ambulance workers.

She raised this during the first Prime Minister’s Questions held since Labour won the General Election today, Wednesday.

Parliament heard the point be raised to Keir Starmer, in which she asked for an update on the progress of tackling violence against women in the UK.

Ms Nichols said: “In a week where the National Police Chiefs' Council has declared violence against women and girls a national emergency, Sky News has today published appalling accounts of sexual harassment and violence against women paramedics.

“Can the Prime Minister please update the house on progress towards mission board to finally tackle this scourge in our society.”

This comes after Sky News released a story this morning revealing the harrowing experiences of three former paramedics who worked in a ‘toxic culture of sexual harassment and abuse of power’ within the ambulance service.

In response to Ms Nichols question, the Prime Minister responded: “It is such a serious issue and we have made a commitment of mission to halve violence against women and girls.

“I know from my own experience dealing with these cases as a prosecutor and subsequently just how hard that would be to achieve.

“It does mean that we will have to deliver in a different way, we will have to roll up our sleeves and do difficult things that have not been done in the past.

“In answer to the specific question, we have started work already on the delivery board and I look forward to updating her and the house on the progress we are making on this really important issue.”
