POLICE have given more details about a crash which saw a set of traffic lights were destroyed over the weekend.

Officers from Cheshire Police closed Wilderspool Causeway at around 11.30pm on Friday, at the junction with Loushers Lane and Gainsborough Road.

This came after a car, a black Volkswagen Polo ‘wiped out’ the traffic lights, which came to rest on the windscreen of the car and caused extensive damage to the front of the vehicle.

It was confirmed that the time that a drug driving arrest had been made, but now the force has confirmed that the person arrested was a 17-year-old boy.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “At around 11.30pm on Friday, July 12, police were called to a collision on Wilderspool Causeway, Warrington.

“Officers attended and found a black Volkswagen Polo had collided with traffic lights.

“The driver, a 17-year-old boy from Warrington, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

“He has since been released under investigation while officers continue with enquiries.”

In a statement over the weekend, the force’s special constabulary team said: “SC Hendry, CC Boland, SC Hart and A-block response attended a collision in Warrington.

“A car had crashed due to travelling too quickly, wiping out the traffic lights.

“He tested positive for cannabis so was arrested by SC Hendry on suspicion of drug driving.”
