A STRETCH of the M62 westbound in Warrington has reopened following a serious crash involving two HGVs and a car.

Police, fire services, National Highways and paramedics have been present on the scene since the incident which occurred at around 5.30am this morning, Thursday.

The incident, which saw a collision involving two lorries and a car, took place between junction 9, Warrington and junction 8, Burtonwood.

And the junction has been closed for around 9 hours following the serious crash.

Cheshire Police confirmed that sadly two men have died. A lorry driver, 61, has been arrested.

In an initial statement a spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 5.31am today (Thursday 11 June) police were called to a collision involving two lorries and a car on the M62 westbound between junction 8 and junction 7.

"The westbound carriageway is currently closed while emergency services work at the scene."

Since then the Cheshire Police Roads and Crime unit have been carrying out a thorough investigation into the crash.

National Highways contractors have also been carrying out emergency repairs on the carriageway due to damage to the barriers.

Severe delays have been experienced throughout the day, stretching to junction 10, Croft. 

And roads all across Warrington were faced with congestion through the morning due to the incident and the closure of the junction.

Diversion routes were also put in place this morning due to the closure of the westbound junctions and the junction 8 slip road.

The recovery of vehicles and clean up operation has now concluded, National Highways confirmed, and all closures have been lifted.
