JON Leatherbarrow is a patient and inspirational primary school teacher, who is able to connect with his students and support them with challenges, both big and small.

"A true credit" to Statham Primary School and Nursery, Jon is the winner of our Primary School Teacher of the Year Award 2024.

There was no shortage of praise for Jon and his class clapped and cheered as he was presented with his award in the classroom.

Parent nominations detailed how Mr Leatherbarrow has impacted their children’s school life, including one who said he showed "true patience” and was able to connect with their son, helping him break down the barriers he faced with his speech and reading during his time in Year Two and Year Three.

In their letter of recommendation, the parent said: “He’s kind, compassionate and listens to all the kids.

“I don’t know how he does it, but all the children, my son included, look up to him and look forward to going into his classroom every day.

“Every morning, he greets every child with a smile on his face and usually a high five.

“He even got my son to start wearing his glasses!”

Another nomination recounted how Mr Leatherbarrow attended an afterschool club to make a child feel more comfortable and to encourage him to keep going.

They went on: “He really cares about his students and their futures.

“He wants the best for each and every one of them.

“Every single child in his class matters.

“They want to learn and go to school and they feel safe and happy there because of him.”

“Mr Leatherbarrow has been at our school for the past ten years and excels in behaviour management, fostering strong, positive relationships with children, families and the wider community.

“His love of running has inspired children at Statham to also become involved in the sport.”

Jon said: “I feel extremely lucky to have joined Statham as a newly qualified teacher ten years ago and to have worked alongside so many amazing teachers and support staff who have helped me along the way.

“The children make it a really special place to work and I’m very grateful for the support I’ve received from the parents, carers and the wider Statham community.”
