A Cheshire canal boat ride has been named one of the UK’s best by The Telegraph.

Introducing the list, the newspaper said: “The UK’s artificial waterways may be in crisis, but these hidden gems have long provided a taste of a truly British holiday”.

The Weaver features in the list and is highlighted for being the best option for its enormous locks and the historical Anderton Boat Lift.

The Telegraph said: “The Weaver has locks that can hold at least 17 narrowboats. In the 19th century, these were the largest locks in Britain, able to take 1,000-ton ships carrying salt to the Manchester Ship Canal and beyond.

“Today, this 19-mile stretch is free of commercial traffic and passes through quiet countryside. Locks are operated for you.

“Getting on to the Weaver means riding the 19th-century Anderton Boat Lift, the oldest working boat lift in the world, due for closure later this year for a major overhaul.”

The newspaper explained that ABC Boat Hire is the place to book if you’re looking for enormous locks and a bit of history on your boat ride.

The company has a four-berth boat at Anderton Marina and you could spend a week on there for £1,614.

Canal cruises across the UK are included in the list including some in Oxfordshire, Scotland and Warwickshire.

ABC Boat Hire is well-praised on Tripadvisor with a 4.5-star rating from 58 reviews, at the time of writing.

One visitor said: “We had a fabulous day on the canal yesterday. The team are so friendly and helpful - absolutely flawless customer service. The boat was great and we were given excellent instructions on how to steer it etc.

“Overall would 100% recommend - an excellent day out had by all (even the dog!)”

Another commented: “This was our second week’s holiday on a narrow boat. The kids (10, 8 & 6) loved it so much last year they insisted we do it again. We went towards the end of the season, which I suspect means the canals are quieter, so less waiting for locks to clear. Over a whole week I think we only waited twice.

“Our older kids love the locks, and it keeps them active. Ninety-two locks last year, but only 44 this year. Different route, but one which included tunnels and aqueducts. All very exciting. And I’m between, chance to read, play games and decide where to stop and eat for the night.

“Highly recommend holiday and the ABC team and boats have been excellent both times.”
