A DAD has completed a gruelling challenge for Warrington Hospital in memory of his 21-year-old daughter.

John McSherry teamed up with 38 family members, friends, and colleagues for a fundraising hike up Mam Tor.

John’s daughter Erin sadly died in November 2022 after suffering several cardiac arrests at home, caused by fatal blood clots in her lungs and heart, before being admitted to ICU.

Erin selflessly chose to donate her organs, an act that has since improved the lives of at least three individuals.

Back in April, John, who is head of operations at Mitie and Co-op in Newton-le-Willows, took on the Peak District charity walk to thank and show his support for the intensive care unit (ICU) team who cared for Erin.

The team completed the walk in three hours and 40 minutes and raised an incredible £2,532 for Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals Charity.

John said: “The staff working in ICU went above and beyond, showing consideration and kindness during such a difficult time. They provided amazing access for us, Erin’s boyfriend, Joe, and her friends, allowing us to stay overnight in the waiting area.

“Their kindness and support made a real difference, and we wanted to give back to ensure future patients and their families receive the same care.”

The funds raised by the initiative will contribute towards the extension of Warrington’s ICU to develop a balcony garden for some of the most critically ill patients.

Ellis Clarke, ICU Matron, said: “We are deeply grateful to John for raising funds in memory of his daughter Erin. The funds will contribute to the creation of our balcony garden, allowing patients to experience the outdoors and beautiful plants.

“This garden fulfils a long-held dream of our staff to provide a space that enhances patient wellbeing, reducing disorientation from prolonged ICU stays. Thanks to John’s dedication and everyone’s generosity, future patients will be able to benefit from the serene environment.”
