IT is always nice to shine a light on businesses in the town that have been recognised for being great at what they do.

So, with Plaice Station recently winning the Warrington Guardian’s Best Fish and Chips award for 2024, voted for by readers, it would be stupid not to visit ourselves, right?

We should say from the outset that our visit was unannounced, and no free fish and chips were handed over – not even a free side of mushy peas.

We wanted an unbiased visit to get the service and food any customer would get – and we can see why regulars love it so much.

Based at Padgate railway station, the setting is unique, and we were greeted with a very warm welcome by a smiling chef and server.

We went for a serving of plain old battered haddock and chips – although it was anything but plain, and the fish must have been a whale given its size.

Portion sizes are not an issue here, we can safely say.

We also opted for the same, but one with peas and gravy – controversial we know, especially given the reactions of some in our office – as well as fish and chips with spicy curry sauce.

The chips were crispy and plentiful, as was the batter on the fish, which covered a generously sized serving of delicious white fish.

The gravy, peas and curry sauce were also delicious and complimented the dish well, assisted with the staple condiments of salt and vinegar.

Having shared the legendary English dish around the office, we did not hear one word of complaint.

What really struck us was the friendliness of staff at the chippy though, who were always smiling and welcoming.

While we were there, one customer popped in asking how long the business had been there, having not been aware of it before.

It is great to see people becoming more aware of this hidden gem, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who asks us.
