A CARE home in Warrington held a D-Day anniversary party for residents and families, attended by a 92-year-old war veteran.

Victoria House Residential Care Home, on Victoria Street, celebrated in style yesterday, Thursday, for D-Day’s 80th anniversary, decorating the home from top to bottom.

Staff came dressed up as 1940s land girls, nurses and foot soldiers and the residents dressed in red, white and blue.

One resident, Edward Sankey, known as Bill, was previously a member of the Gurkha rifles and served in Malaysia as a medic.

The 92-year-old, who was born in Croft, also managed the royal train and received an MBE from the late Queen in 1953.

Bill told staff that they went ‘above and beyond’ for the D-Day celebration and that it was ‘magnificent’.

A buffet including prosecco and strawberries was served to guests and music was played throughout the day, and some relatives of residents danced the jive.
