POLICE believe that despicable burglaries carried out in three Warrington churches could be linked.

An appeal was previously issued by Cheshire Police seeking help from the public in relation to a burglary of the Grade II-listed St Thomas’ Church in Stockton Heath.

Lowlifes caused damage to the historic place of worship during a break-in, forcing entry to steal cash from a donations box.

Between Thursday evening and the early hours of Friday, an unknown number of individuals attempted to forcibly access the London Road church by breaking a padlock on the front door.

Undeterred by their unsuccessful attempt, they proceeded to enter by breaking a window, and once inside, around £20 in cash was stolen from a donations box.

Now, the force has confirmed that two more churches were targeted in the vicinity on the same night.

It was reported on Friday morning that, between 12.50am and 1am, burglars damaged a window to gain entry to St Wilfred's Church in Grappenhall.

When inside, they prised open a drawer and stole an iPhone and a laptop.

Also targeted that night by the unscrupulous thieves was Lymm United Reformed Church, with burglars damaging a lock.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Officers are aware of two further burglaries at St Wilfred's Church, Grappenhall, and Lymm United Reformed Church.

“We are keeping an open mind as to whether they are connected to the incident at St Thomas' Church in Stockton Heath.”

“The same goes for anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage which they believe will be of assistance.

“While our enquiries continue, we are also urging residents in the area to remain cautious and ensure that their properties and outbuildings are kept secure at all times.”
