A STEAKHOUSE has seen its plans for a pergola to cover outdoor diners refused permission.

Plans had been submitted to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department for Bavette steakhouse, on London Road in Stockton Heath.

These sought approval for a pergola made of light aluminium and glass to prevent sun and rain.

Planning documents state: “The building currently has a flat roofed canopy extension which extends the full width of the building.

“The application proposes the installation of a canopy to the principal elevation above an area intended to be used as pavement seating.

“The proposed canopy would consist of a retractable fabric canopy supported by metal brackets and roller system.”

Judith Wheeler, borough councillor for Stockton Heath, called the plans in for inspection by the planning committee.

She said: “The proposed pergola will be an additional obstacle to the safe and free flow of pedestrians on this busy section of pavement.

“While the pavement is wide, it is obvious that parked cars, illegally and frequently narrow the pavement considerably.

“If we allow this as a permanent structure, then other premises may decide to follow suit and we create a precedent.

“Having to walk on the road is NOT an option in Stockton Heath.

“The pergola will introduce an unwelcome addition to the street scene.

“Unfortunately, the building is already totally out of keeping with the look of the village, but this is a conservation area, and there is no reason to change it further.”

Stockton Hearth Parish Council also objected, however it was focused on the potential pavement seating and not the canopy.

In rejecting the application, planners said: “Insufficient detail has been provided in regard to the colour, design, materials and appearance of the proposed canopy to demonstrate that there would be no unacceptable impacts, and that it would not detract from the visual amenity of the district centre, street scene or the character of the conservation area.”
