DESPICABLE burglars have caused damages to a historic Warrington church during a break-in.

Lowlifes targeted the Grade II-listed St Thomas’ Church in Stockton Heath, forcing entry to steal cash from a donations box.

Between yesterday evening, Thursday, and the early hours of this morning, Friday, an unknown number of individuals attempted to forcibly access the place of worship by breaking a padlock on the front door.

Undeterred by their unsuccessful attempt, they proceeded to enter the London Road church breaking a window.

Once inside, around £20 in cash was stolen from a donations box.

Built in 1868, the church is listed on Historic England’s Heritage At Risk register.

Cheshire Police has confirmed that it is investigating the burglary, with enquiries ongoing, and as part of their investigation, officers are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

DS Alexander Reeves said: “As well as appealing for witnesses, we are also looking to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area in the evening of Thursday, May 30, and the early hours of Friday, May 31.

“The same goes for anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage which they believe will be of assistance.

“While our enquiries continue, we are also urging residents in the area to remain cautious and ensure that their properties and outbuildings are kept secure at all times.”
