A MAN with an ‘overwhelming need’ for rehabilitation has been given a suspended sentence after threatening his dad with a knife and demanding money for alcohol.

On January 11, Lloyd Broadhurst, of Beckett Drive, Winwick, was arrested after his dad called 999, informing police that he had been chased from his property by his son.

Broadhurst, 28, had begun the confrontation by asking for money to buy alcohol from his mum, who was not in the house at the time, and told his dad to call her to send him money.

The court heard that Broadhurst often demands money from his parents to help fund his addiction to alcohol and drugs.

The prosecution, Mr Dhillon, then told the court that Broadhurst ‘came at’ his father with a knife, who could not remember if he was threatened by him in the process but was curled up on the floor.

The knife was then discarded by Broadhurst, who proceeded to throw ornaments and objects before approaching his dad again with his fist.

His dad then ran from the property whilst being chased by Broadhurst, and called the police, who noted that he smelt of alcohol upon his arrest.

Although his dad did not press charges against him, Broadhurst pleaded guilty to affray.

The defence representing Broadhurst, Mr Wood, told the court that his dad would allow Broadhurst to stay with him should he be given a suspended sentence.

“He would welcome his son back and he wants very much for his son to get the help he needs,” said Mr Wood.

Broadhurst, who has committed 17 other offences, was sentenced to 33 weeks in custody, suspended over a period of 18 months.

Judge Michael Armstrong noted that Broadhurst had a ‘realistic expectation of rehabilitation’ and an ‘overwhelming need for it’.

Broadhurst was also sentenced to 30 rehabilitation activity days, mental health and alcohol treatment.
