BIRCHWOOD will be getting a larger supermarket after plans for an expansion were nodded through.

German chain Aldi submitted plans to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department for an extension to its existing store.

These were for proposed external alterations to existing retail units to facilitate their operation as a single food store.

Also included in the application are modifications to vehicular access and car parking, the relocation of mechanical equipment and associated site works.

The application was considered by council planning officers and has been given the go-ahead.

The location of the plans are units D, E and F at Birchwood Shopping Centre, off Dewhurst Road.

Unit D is currently occupied by Aldi, but units E and F are currently vacant, having last been in retail use by Argos.

The proposed extension is 775 square metres, providing an overall sales floor area of 1,407 square metres.

Aldi says the scheme will create five full-time and five part-time jobs, but it would result in the loss of 23 parking spaces.

Planning documents stated: “The proposal is the expansion of the existing ALDI food store that is currently in use.

“The existing food store is no longer fit for purpose as it does not provide a large enough sales area for its current usage.

“The expansion of the store and rearrangement of the car park is considered the best way forward.”

Documents added: “The scheme proposal is an improvement to the existing layout providing a more efficient building without significant impact on the remainder of the site.”
