TWO best friends have raised £10,000 after conquering the London Marathon and Manchester Marathon in aid of two suicide prevention charities.
Mitchell Thompson, 32, and Katie Leach, 33, decided to undertake the running challenge following the death of Mitchell’s dad, Peter, in August last year.
Mitchell, who is from Ellesmere Port, signed up to complete the London Marathon after his grief inspired him to take action.
Determined to show support, Katie, who is from Warrington, signed up to complete the Manchester Marathon shortly after.
The friends, who first met at university in 2010, both raised money through the marathons for suicide prevention charities in Peter’s memory.
“This cause is obviously so close to my heart – and if I thought I might stop even one individual from taking their life, the many miles and the 26.2 on event day would all be worth it,” said Mitchell.
“We miss dad everyday, and I would plead with anyone who is fighting the same battle – please reach out to your friends, family or either of these amazing charities.”
The duo raised a total of £10,000, donating £9,000 to The Samaritans, and the further £1,000 to Andy’s Man Club.
“We are both so proud of what we’ve achieved, but I’m especially blow away by Mitch’s resilience through this difficult time, both in the run and his everyday life,” said Katie.
“Hugging Mitch at mile six… then 18… then again at the finish – I just couldn’t be prouder.
“The atmosphere on the day was second to none, but maybe it seemed so feel-good because my gruelling race was over!”
