BLACK Sheep Wools – the UK’s largest yarn shop based at The Warehouse Studios in Culcheth – has scooped three awards in their 40th anniversary year.
The business, which first opened its doors in 1983, won honours for their workshops and classes, the shop and online personality at the Craftworld Yarn Industry Awards.
Director Sara Geraghty took Best Online Personality, Black Sheep Craft Barn was named Best Shop North of England and the workshops and classes claimed top spot.
At the heart of Black Sheep Wools is Sara, who passion for knitting, crochet and all things yarn shines through.
Sara and her brother Steve Mulvey, who is also a director, have nurtured the business into a haven for yarn and stitching since their parents and business founders Carol and Paul Mulvey retired.
Sara keeps the customers and followers engaged with regular newsletters and live streams as well as make-alongs and blogs.
The live streams took off during the Covid-19 pandemic with members of the community feeling connected during national and local lockdowns and have now become a cornerstone of the Black Sheep brand.
Sara regularly shares her latest makes as well as hints and tips.
Black Sheep’s workshops and classes provide a base for learning new creative skills.
They’re hosted by professional tutors and held in Craft Barn catering for crafters of all levels and skill sets.
Sara said: “Whether you’re taking your first steps in crochet or you’re a seasoned crafter seeking new challenges, there’s something for everyone.
“Black Sheep’s workshops are a place where skills are honed, friendships are started and everyone is welcome to spend time with like-minded people.”
The Black Sheep Craft Barn is a destination stop for yarn and stitch lovers across the north west and has now been recognised as the best shop in the north of England.

Steve said: “We won in three categories and are incredibly grateful to everyone who voted for us.”
