RESIDENTS living in areas of Warrington along the River Mersey are being told to expect flooding.
The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning and a flood alert for the Mersey estuary in the town.
Both came into effect this morning, Monday, due to high tides, which are expected to peak this afternoon from 12.30pm.
The more severe warning is for the Mersey estuary at Arpley Bridge, at Bridge Foot in the town centre, with flooding expected on parts of Chester Road and Arpley Road, underneath Arpley Railway Bridge, from 1pm.
The alert meanwhile extends into Woolston Eyes, The Twiggeries, Cardinal Newman High School, Howley, Victoria Park, Latchford, Centre Park, Lower Walton, Sankey Bridges and Penketh.
An Environment Agency spokesman said: “A flood warning and flood alert have been issued due to the high tide forecast for this afternoon, Monday.
“We are expecting higher than normal tides over the next three days, and as a result, we may issue further flood alerts and flood warnings.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updated messaging during this period of high tides.
“We are liaising with emergency services and local authorities.
“Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
“This message will be updated by 6pm, or as the situation changes.”
