A HEFTY financial penalty has been handed to a pensioner for speeding at close to 100mph on the motorway.

The case of Abu Baker Anis was recently heard before Manchester Magistrates' Court for actions behind the wheel on the M62.

The 80-year-old, of Holmes Court in Birchwood, was caught breaking the speed limit on the motorway on June 24 last year.

This was while driving a black Mercedes-Benz GLE heading westbound between junctions 12 for the M60 at Eccles Interchange and 11 for Birchwood.

The defendant was caught by an automatic camera device breaking the 70mph speed limit by travelling at 96mph.

Guilt was found proved by way of a single justice procedure and Anis was ordered to pay a total of £963.

This is broken down into a fine of £624, statutory surcharge to fund victim services of £249 and court costs of £90.

In addition, the defendant’s driving record was endorsed with five penalty points, with the guilty plea taken into account by magistrates when imposing sentence.
