TWO Warrington hotels have been compared to Fawlty Towers in recent TripAdvisor reviews.
The legendary 1970s sitcom saw John Cleese playing the part of Basil Faulty, running Faulty Towers hotel in Torquay with his wife.
Numerous mishaps befell the accommodation – which is comparable to two hotels in Warrington, according to two recent TripAdvisor reviews.
One was for Patten Arms Hotel, opposite Bank Quay station near the town centre, which was ranked 21 out of 23 hotels in Warrington on TripAdvisor, with an average rating of three-out-of-five among more than 200 reviewers.
One recent reviewer wrote: “My instincts on entering this hotel told me this place is used to house the homeless, and a taxi driver later confirmed to me this is correct.
“We were only here one night, and I just had to laugh about it, make a Fawlty Towers joke and hope I didn't catch anything.
“Filthy, smelly, ‘dated’ doesn't cover the decor. Didn't eat the breakfast as I'm celiac, and although they offered gluten-free toast, I didn't trust them not to cross-contaminate me. It looked pretty awful.
“Poor fish in sad tanks in the dining room not fit for habitation represent the rooms really.
“Corridors like a bail hostel. Rooms, filthy. Beds, horrible and uncomfortable. Some of the lights worked, so that's a bonus.
“Honestly, it is cheeky still advertising it as a hotel to the public, and the publicity photos are nothing short as a lie.
“It is a homeless hostel. The owners should admit it and run it as such. I have seen prisons in better nick, no pun intended.
“All I can say is it gave me a good laugh, and as I left I told the owner not to mention the war. I don't think he got the joke.”
Another Faulty Towers reference was made by a reviewer who recently stayed at The Gulliver’s Hotel, at Gulliver’s World theme park in Old Hall.
This accommodation was ranked the 12th best hotel in Warrington on TripAdvisor, with an average rating of four-out-of-five among more than 800 reviewers.
The review read: “The hotel itself was fine, we had a family ‘unicorn room’ with bunk beds for the kids, which was reasonably comfortable.
“What really let the hotel down was the breakfast experience in the morning. Wow – Fawlty Towers, eat your heart out.
“It was really busy and massively understaffed. The poor girls were trying to run reception and serve breakfast customers.
“There was no fresh OJ, just orange cordial, and cereal was the only option for the kids and choice of sausage or bacon bap for the adults.
“Tea and coffee were not fresh and came from a machine in takeaway cups, I could not find a spoon or a bowl anywhere and had to ask staff to bring fresh ones out, and even then the only spoons they had were soup spoons.
“There were loads of uncleared tables as staff were clearly stressed and overwhelmed. Minimise costs to maximise profits regardless of customer care.”
Both hotels had the option of responding to reviews on the TripAdvisor website, but did not.
