A VOLUNTEER who has been at driving at a much-loved miniature railway is hanging up his driver's hat - aged 85.

The High Legh Miniature Railway, based at the High Legh Garden Centre is 15 years old this October.

And Brian Johnson, from Thelwall, is the longest serving and most senior driver.

The railway runs trains around the grounds of the garden centre welcoming visitors from all over the county.

It relies on volunteers and Brian has decided to step back.

He started as a volunteer back at the site in 2017, after retiring as volunteer manager from the Walled Garden in Grappenhall Heys and since then he's done every Sunday, rain or shine with a big beaming smile on his face.

Warrington Guardian:

Railways general manager Caleb Lovegrove was; "After seven years of enjoying himself, Brian has taken the decision to hang up his HLMR drivers hat, at 85 he's an inspiration to us all.

"I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing Brian a happy 'volunteers retirement' and we hope to see him back soon as a well deserved guest.

"Thank you Brian, we hope you enjoyed it."

One of the most popular and well loved locomotives at the centre by staff and passengers is 'Dennis' whom Brian took a particular liking too.

For the past five years Brian would always be seen nestled into the cab of Dennis, he would spend hour after hour ferrying passengers down to the play area with his lunch box never leaving his side.
