A RESIDENT was left ‘speechless’ after discovering sections of a historic sandstone wall had been ‘stolen’.

Police say they are aware of the reported theft of blocks from the wall along Park Lane, near to Walton Hall and Gardens and Walton Hall Golf Club.

Photos show a number of heavy blocks from the top of the wall missing.

The resident said: “While out for a walk at dinnertime, my wife and I came across large sections missing of the sandstone wall on Park Lane around Walton Hall and the golf club.

“I checked with the park maintenance team and they have also spotted this, and it has nothing to do with any wall repairs or anything like that.

“Having lived in the area for 20 years, and with the walk having stood for probably hundreds of years, I am utterly speechless.

“What possesses some people to simply come along and take a wall is beyond me.

“These slabs are huge and heavy. Wherever they turn up, it will be evident that they have been stolen and someone will know something.

“How can we stop further sections from being removed, and how can the wall be repaired?”

Cheshire Police has confirmed that officers are aware of the missing blocks, and it is appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

A spokesman said: “At 11am on Tuesday, January 30, police received reports that a section of a sandstone wall had been stolen from outside a golf club in Warrington.

“It is unknown when the incident took place.

“Anyone with any information is asked to visit cheshire.police.uk/tell-us or call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting IML 1745668.”

The issue was also reported to Warrington South MP Andy Carter who said: “I am very sad to see this desecration of our local heritage.

"Unfortunately, it seems that there has been a spate of these types of thefts occurring around Cheshire.

"It is very sad and shows the total disregard these people have for these types of structures.

"It looks evident that these are not just opportunistic thugs, but organised criminals.

“I would strongly encourage anyone who may have any information to get in touch with the police to help them to lock up the culprits as soon as possible.”
