GREAT SANKEY High School has been forced to close after facing damages from Storm Jocelyn.

A section of the school site has been cordoned off due to damage caused by the strong winds this morning, Wednesday.

Students have been informed they will be returning home following the incident and the school has announced its closure for the day.

As one of the buildings is temporarily out of bounds, this is said to have comprised the ‘external system that ensures the safe circulation of students around the site’.

Meanwhile a parent whose child attends the school has reported seeing a ‘hole in the side of the sixth form building’ following damage last week.

Head teacher at the school, Gary Evans said: “Engineers will be in school today to assess the impact of the storm.

“Unfortunately, this gives us no choice other than to close the school to all students today.”

“We will communicate plans for tomorrow and the rest of the week later today,” he added.

Staff will set schoolwork on the online portal Bromcom for students to complete throughout the day.

Informing parents of how students will be released from the premises, the head said all year groups will be asked to leave through the Barrow Hall Lane exit this morning.

Parents are being advised to contact the school if their child cannot return home so that further arrangements can be made.
