THE former governor of two Warrington prisons has chosen her Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4 with Adele, Simon and Garfunkel, and Soul II Soul among her favourite music acts.
Pia Sinha is the director of the Prison Reform Trust having previously been the governor of HMP Thorn Cross in 2013 and HMP Risley.
She was born in north India and came to the UK when she was 14, studying economics and psychology at university and pursuing a career as a psychologist, which took her into working in both male and female prisons.
She was the first Asian woman to run a prison in England and Wales at Thorn Cross and then turned around HMP Liverpool, which was described as Britain’s worst jail in 2018.
This earned her the St Martin’s Award for Prison Governance and in April this year, she became director of the Prison Reform Trust.
Speaking to presenter Lauren Laverne earlier this month, Pia chose eight songs, a book and a luxury item to take with her, if she was ever castaway to a desert island.
Pia’s choices included Kathy’s Song by Simon and Garfunkel, Kumar Sanu’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha, Back to Life by Soul II Soul and Leftfield’s Melt as well as Andmoreagain by Love, Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi’s Black (featuring Norah Jones), The Power of Love from Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Adele’s Hometown Glory.
Her book of choice would be A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and her luxury item would be chilli sauce.
