A BRAZILIAN Ju-jitsu club in Warrington got competitive with a 24-hour rollathon to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Sukata Warrington, based at Bank Quay, welcomed participants to drop-in for as long as they could roll over a 24-hour period this month, from 6am to 6am.

Gareth Childs, aged 40 and a purple-belt student at the martial arts school, organised the event in aid of his dad, who has undergone surgery for prostate cancer.

He said: “He has always gone out of his way to help anyone in any way he could.

“I am doing this so he knows that he is not in this fight alone.”

Brazilian ju-jitsu is a self-defence martial art, and the rollathon involved a minimum of two people grappling on a mat at any given time during the event’s duration.

Participants had the chance to take on the owner of Sukata Warrington, Scott Pickering, who has a third-degree black belt, at the side of the rollathon for a donation.

Scott said it was an ‘amazing’ event, which attracted between 50 and 60 participants and raised £3,325 for the charity.

Prostate Cancer UK funds research into better treatments and tests that can identify fast-growing cancers early to save thousands of lives, with one in eight men getting prostate cancer.
