WARRINGTON’S first Hong Kong football team gained a victory in their first ever match.

Yellow Lion FC (YLFC) started originally in 2021 and is a ‘community orientated’ team with most of its core members having migrated from Hong Kong.

The team played their first match against Manchester team Konger Legend last Sunday at Orford Jubilee Hub.

They proudly took home a victory with a 2-1 win.

A spokesperson from the club said: “Our primary goal is to bring together friends who share a passion for football, play the sport in their leisure time, and make new acquaintances.

“As of now, we have approximately 170 members in our WhatsApp group, with around 50 to 60 active participants.

“These members are mainly residents of Warrington, but we also have friends from other areas like Manchester and Liverpool.”

YLFC holds regular football activities in the WA3 area every Friday.

In addition, they also organize family-oriented events. Notably, in May 2022, they collaborated with Tranmere Rovers FC to host a football tournament with a Hong Kong theme.

This event attracted seven teams, and WYLFC performed admirably, finishing in third place.

The tournament marked the first-ever collaboration between an English professional club and a Hong Kong-based team, making it a significant occasion.

Speaking on new ventures for the club, a spokesperson added: “We are currently participating in a six-month Hong Kong league.

“This league has also drawn seven local Hong Kong teams, with a total of 12 matches, each of which is broadcast on YouTube. The season for this league is expected to run until around March 2024.”

The team say they believe football is a ‘sport that can unite people’ and ‘bring joy to the community’.

“We hold deep respect for every friend who has left their home to start anew, and we strive to achieve our ideals through teamwork and unwavering dedication,” they added.

Yellow Lion FC will next play against Liverpool Hong Konger on December 3 at Birchwood High School on Brock Road. The game starts at 2pm.
