THE site of a closed care home could be transformed to accommodate 18 new homes.

Plans have been submitted to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department for land currently occupied by Thelwall Grange Nursing Home.

The site comprises 1.5 hectares of land previously used as part of the former Weaste Lane care facility, which formally closed in 2022.

Applicant Urban Imprint has now drawn up proposals for a partial demolition of some buildings on the site, which will be replaced with dwellings.

The application is also for the subsequent conversion of the main vacant care home to provide apartments, along with access, landscaping and associated works.

Plans state: “The proposed development comprises of the selective demolition and conversion of the main building – the former nursing home on the site.

“Several poor-quality buildings, including several modern and visually unappealing elements, are to be removed, leaving the three-storey main body of the original building, as well as some secondary elements – all of which derive considerable architectural merit.

“The building is to be converted to six two-bed apartments, a semi-detached three bedroomed dwelling attached to the apartments, and a separate detached four-bedroom dwellinghouse.

“This will ensure that the best and most architecturally significant element of the historic buildings on the site will be retained.

“Following the removal of the modern extensions and alterations including the stablings, the volume and scale of the demolished buildings on the site will be reused to provide 10 new dwellings, ranging from two-bed bungalows to four-bed detached homes.”
