INMATES at HMP Risley have donated six bikes to a local primary school.
Those who are incarcerated at the prison are able to take part in various workshops while in prison.
One of the workshops includes working to refurbish, clean, and repair bikes that have been donated to the prison by the Margaret Carey Foundation.
The bikes were given to the school on behalf of the CFO Discovery programme that is run at HMP Risley, and they were donated on Wednesday, October 18.
The headteacher of Twiss Green Primary School, Mrs Hughes, said: "We were pleased to accept the bike for our pupils, which will be used as part of the bikeability programme that is offered here at Twiss Green.
"Getting children and young people cycling not only has physical benefits, but social, thinking, and mental health benefits too.
"We’re grateful to the CFO Discovery programme for providing us with six additional bikes and offering to service these bikes free of charge."
The bikes in the CFO Discover programme are maintained under the watchful eye of Graham, who has more than 20 years of experience as an engineer.
HMP Risley governor Andy Fletcher said “It’s great to be able to see the work that the lads have put in on the bike workshop be used right here in the local community.
"We were delighted to hand over the bike to Mrs Hughes and some of the pupils this morning.
"A special thanks has to go to the Margaret Carey Foundation and Graham and his team for making these bikes safe to ride.
"Graham has kindly offered to service these, free of charge when they require this so more young pupils can access safe bikes in the future.”
