A FLOOD alert has been issued for the River Mersey estuary in Warrington.

The warning, which is now in force, says that flooding is possible and that residents should prepare for that possibility.

It comes at the same time that a yellow weather warning is in place in the town, with Storm Agnes set to arrive imminently.

The alert by the Environment Agency covers parts of Penketh, Lower Walton, Sankey Bridges, Centre Park, Latchford, Howley, Victoria Park and Westy.

It states: “As a result of strong winds and spring tides, tides will be high and may cause flooding over the following six days.

“Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads at Fiddler’s Ferry, Eastford Road and Arpley Bridge, peaking tonight between 10.30pm and 11.15pm at between 6.2m to 6.4m.

“It is possible that river levels may affect Arpley Road under the railway bridge.

“This situation is likely to repeat for every high tide from now until Monday, October 2, with spring tides.

“There are two high tides a day, with the night tides being higher than the daytime high tides.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”
