A FURNITURE store based in Warrington has been accused of leaving some of its customers out of pocket.

The Rug Retailer, based at Cockhedge Shopping Centre, has been spotlighted by a customer for apparently taking her money and not providing any products.

Getting in touch with the Warrington Guardian, the individual - who has asked not to be named - said: "I purchased a rug on July 11 for £43.59. The money was taken out of my account on the same day.

"I realised I didn't receive any confirmation from the company about my purchase, and therefore tried to chase them up.

"I have phoned almost every day and no one answers and the answering machine just states that no one is available to take the call and then hangs up.

"There is no opportunity to leave a message. I have also sent several emails which have never been answered."

The disgruntled customer added: "Unfortunately, I didn't look at the reviews before I purchased the rug but it's quite shocking to see how many people have had the same experience as me.

"I am surprised they are still being allowed to trade."

Reviews for the company available online include the following: "We purchased a rug and £214 was taken out of my account immediately.

"No confirmation email - and no response to email or phone. Absolutely awful how they are still allowed to keep doing this."

Another review reads: "I bought a rug online and was waiting three weeks - still no rug.

"I phoned them dozens of times, emailed and messaged them [too, and got] no response.

"Got in touch with my bank and they got my money back."

When asked by the Warrington Guardian about the allegations, a member of staff said they would look into the claims.

That response was given on July 28 - no further communications or comments have been received from the Rug Retailer by the Warrington Guardian.

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: "It is important that anyone concerned with their dealings with a trader should log their complaint with the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline.

"They provide advice to consumers and will log the complaint with the Local Trading Standards Service.”

According to Hilton Smythe the business is currently on the market.
