IN this week’s column, Labour Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols highlights World Suicide Prevention Day.
As I write this column, it is World Suicide Prevention Day, and a timely reminder to speak to each other more openly and supportively about our mental health.
This weekend I was proud to join more than 250 walkers for the night-time HOPE 100 Walk for ten miles out from the Halliwell Jones Stadium and back to raise awareness of suicide prevention.
I’d like to praise Livewire Warrington Lifestyles team along with Warrington Speak Up, Warrington Wolves Foundation, Directions for Men and Warrington Veterans Community Support for their commitment to this important cause.
The public absolutely back this drive for awareness and it must be matched by resources from Government for NHS mental health services and supportive charities. One in every hundred deaths worldwide is a suicide, and we owe it to each other to work harder to prevent this.
Back in Westminster this is Nuclear Week in parliament, where there are exhibitions and meeting across the sector.
As the co-chair of the Nuclear all-party group I welcome this attention and the opportunities it brings even beyond the clean contribution it makes to our energy mix; the Nuclear Industry Association produces an annual map of nuclear jobs and I am delighted that Warrington North is second in the country. We continue to grow and attract high skilled, well paid and unionised jobs because of our world-leading expertise in the industry, and I am committed to keep working to secure more of these opportunities locally.
One of the latest advances is the landmark deal that the New Nuclear Laboratory has concluded with Japan’s Atomic Energy Agency on high temperature gas cooled reactors. I warmly welcome the signing of this with the Japanese ambassador and look forward to its benefits being seen in Warrington.
Later this week I look forward to hosting the Skills and Apprenticeship Fair in parliament, showcasing the potential for work in the nuclear industry.
It is a particular pleasure to meet young people embarking on their work in the sector and hearing about the hugely impressive skilled work that they do.
We should be so proud in Warrington that we are a magnet for jobs of the future, and this is a real boast for our town.
