Boy George supports Brianna Ghey charity fundraiser

Brianna, a trans schoolgirl, was stabbed to death at the age of 16 in Culcheth earlier this year.

The Warrington Guardian is working with Brianna's mum, Esther, to fundraise to allow schools to provide more support for schoolchildren.

Opening at 7am on Thursday, September 7, the fundraiser has already raised more than £1,800 for the Mindfulness in Schools Project, which will provide training for members of staff at schools in Warrington.

Sharing the fundraiser on social media, Boy George - who is the lead vocalist of Culture Club - said: "In memory of Brianna Ghey. I pray for change.

"This is what your anger does. It destroys entire families.

"It destroys communities."

The campaign has also been promoted on social media by India Willoughby, a broadcaster who was the world's first trans newsreader.

She said: "Esther and the Warrington Guardian are looking to launch a school project in her memory teaching pupils how to stop and think. Mindfulness.

"Please share and support."

During the build-up to the campaign launching, Esther said: "When Tom Bedworth suggested a joint campaign with myself and the Guardian, I jumped at the opportunity.

"I knew that I wanted to do something but I felt I didn't have the knowledge or the resources to start something on my own.

"To be working alongside the Warrington Guardian with the aim of making a positive change for people in my hometown is something very special to me.

"Tom is a very genuine person and has been working hard to pull things together. I think we make a great team."

Messages of support have also been left on the fundraising page, with one reading: "Wishing you all the best with creating a lasting legacy in memory of Brianna to help and support the kids of today who need so much help, especially in regards to social media and the issues and challenges that comes with it."

Speaking about the support given by Esther and the Warrington Guardian, CEO of the Mindfulness in Schools Project - Emily Slater - said: "We feel incredibly honoured that the campaign has chosen to highlight the work of MiSP and the need to ensure more children, young people and teachers benefit.  

"It is vitally important that we equip our children and young people with the skills to cope with life's extraordinary ups and downs and help them, as Brianna's mother so beautifully put it, 'live healthy, fulfilled lives.'

"We will ensure that any amount raised goes towards bringing mindfulness to as many schools as possible, and wish the Peace in Mind campaign every success."
