A TOTAL of 264 Ukrainians have been rehomed in Warrington as part of the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme.
Under the Government’s scheme, people displaced due to the war in Ukraine, following Russia’s invasion in 2022, have been able to be temporarily rehomed in the UK.
It has allowed individuals or organisations to register to sponsor people fleeing the country.
Warrington Borough Council says 264 people have relocated to Warrington via the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
But it stated that the 264 figure only relates to the Homes for Ukraine scheme, and some may have come to the UK via other routes, such as the Family Scheme.
Furthermore, the council says a ‘small number’ of Ukrainian guests that it is aware of have opted to relocate outside Warrington or go back to Ukraine, but people relocating ‘do not have to inform’ the council that they are doing so, so an accurate figure ‘cannot be provided’.
The council confirmed that the Homes For Ukraine scheme is still ongoing, but new arrivals have dropped since the scheme first launched. There have been ‘two recent arrivals’ through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
A spokesman said: “Warrington residents and communities have been very generous in their support for Ukrainian guests, with many residents taking them into their homes, and many more providing wider help and support.
“We are very grateful for the kindness shown by our residents to our strong and growing Ukrainian community in Warrington.”
