A SECOND flood alert in 24 hours has been issued for the River Mersey in Warrington.

The first came yesterday afternoon, Thursday, warning that flooding was possible and urging residents to ‘be prepared’.

This has now been extended this afternoon, Friday, with the Mersey in the town due to experience a higher tide than expected, the Environment Agency says.

Among the areas incorporated into the alert, as shown on the below map, are parts of Penketh, Sankey Bridges, Centre Park, Latchford and Victoria Park.

The alert reads: “The high tide is expected to be higher than usual at the Mersey estuary at Warrington as a result of high spring tides.

Warrington Guardian:

“Consequently, flooding of low-lying land is possible tomorrow morning, Saturday, peaking at 2.45am at the following places.

“Fiddlers Ferry will peak at 6.3metres, Eastford Road at 6.45metres and Arpley Bridge at 6.5metres.

“It is possible that river levels may affect Arpley Road under the railway bridge.

“Our incident response staff are closely monitoring the situation and will issue flood warnings if necessary.

“Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation. This message will be updated when the situation changes.
